Boys U13 SFAI National Cup
Aisling initially struggled to break down a defensive and well organised Granagh side, playing up a significant hill in the first half. Darragh Murray opened the scoring after two minutes with a well hit shot from distance but Granagh equalised from a free kick just before half time when Darren Nwankwo was harshly punished for a strong but well-timed tackle. Playing down the hill against a tiring side in the second half allowed Aisling to capitalise on their dominance. Just after the restart Leon Kirrane rattled the cross-bar with a fine effort from a corner before Darragh Murragh coolly finished from a one-on-one with the keeper. Donnacha O'Leary added to the scoring with a well drilled effort from a tight angle before Darragh completed his hat-trick, the third to be assisted by John Ryan. Darragh repaid the compliments for John to round off the scoring shortly before the final whistle. Aisling will have learned some lessons from a hard-fought win as they progress to the National Cup round of 32 – final score 5-1
Girls U12
A cold foggy evening in Aisling Annacotty saw another great performance from the home team. The girls started brightly and moved the ball up the field with fast connecting play to take a two-goal early lead. The girls were in full control of the game with great defending and cover play from the backs and goalkeeper. The home team pushed forward with every attack and the combination of some great through balls and the cool finishing from the league’s top scorer Rebecca Shinnors saw them add another two goals before half time. 4-0 down Charleville came out a lot more determined in the second half and were denied two goal scoring chances by the Aisling keeper Patrycja Nedzed with some super saves before the home side scored another two on the counter attack. The away team never stopped trying and deservedly got a consolation goal. The game finished 6-1 to Aisling to keep them top of the table after 7 games. Well Done to all the girls.
Boys Under 15
The U15As continued to set the pace in the Premier League with a 4-0 victory at home to Granville FC on Saturday. The visitors came with a defensive game plan, playing five across the back and only one up front in an effort to frustrate their hosts. However, we created several good chances in the first half and only some brilliant goalkeeping by the Granville ‘keeper kept the score at 0-0. But just before half time a superb Sean O’Shea header from a corner by Dara Costelloe broke the deadlock. A five-minute blitz early in the second half put the result beyond doubt. Sean Fahy and Mark Donnellan combined well to get into the box and when Donnellan was pulled down, Dara Costelloe dispatched the penalty. Four minutes later another great through ball by Fahy put Costelloe in for his second. Shortly after the restart, Costelloe was involved again winning the ball off the Granville full back in a dangerous area before putting O’Shea in for his second. The result keeps us two points clear of Fairview Rangers at the top of the table.
Girls U16
Aisling Annacotty U16 girls continued their fine form of late, with a 4-2 win at home to Murroe despite starting with 10 players. Murroe opened the scoring after 10 minutes, before a fine cross from Anna Carr found Aisling Doran in space, who wrong-footed the keeper with a well-directed, left footed equaliser. Rachel O’Dell’s arrival, from hockey exertions, after 20 minutes, brought us up to the full complement, and the two teams went at it hammer and tongs, until 15 minutes into the second half, when Rachel drew a foul inside the box, and Sarah Cleary gave the Murroe keeper no chance with the resultant spot kick. Back came Murroe however, and Abby McCarthy, who was having a fine game in goal, could do nothing about an excellent second for Murroe’s Cara Griffin. With the game finely balanced, it was all hands to the pumps, with Íde Ní Ifearnáin, Amy Keogh, and Katie Murphy doing Trojan defensive work, and Sarah Cleary mopping up anything that got past them. Then came a moment of inspiration, as Rachel O’Dell powered her way through several attempted tackles, before squaring to Laoise Ní Aodha, who buried the shot with customary panache. The tension ratcheted up as Murroe went after another equaliser, and the defence was grateful for moments of respite due to excellent hold up play from Ally Reeves, Aisling Doran and Finn Pearse, who were having their best games in an Aisling jersey. Finally, the tie was put to bed, when the U16 league’s top scorer (and U14 league top scorer!) Laoise Ni Aodha raced down the middle on a breakaway, and sealed the win with another clinical finish from 18 yards.
